Title: Dance Teacher
Position Overview:
Merrick Academy, Queens' pioneering charter school, seeks a passionate and dedicated Dance Teacher to inspire students through the art of movement and self-expression. This pivotal role is designed to nurture creativity, confidence, and an appreciation for diverse dance forms while aligning with Merrick Academy's commitment to STEAM education and whole-child support. The Dance Teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering dynamic and engaging dance instruction under the guidance of the Principal.
Reports To: Principal
Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience, including a robust benefits package and comprehensive professional development opportunities.
Status: Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:45 AM - 4:00 PM
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging dance instruction incorporating technique, choreography, and performance, while integrating interdisciplinary connections with Merrick Academy's STEAM mission.
- Create and implement lesson plans that utilize various instructional strategies, such as movement exploration, improvisation, and cultural dance forms, to foster active participation and creativity.
- Introduce students to diverse dance styles' history and cultural significance, promoting global awareness and an appreciation for artistic diversity.
- Develop opportunities for students to perform and showcase their learning in school-wide events, assemblies, and community engagements.
- Assess and monitor student progress in dance skills and creative expression, adapting instruction to meet the individual needs of all students, including those with special needs.
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment conducive to physical, social, and emotional development.
- Collaborate with other teachers to develop cross-curricular projects and integrate dance into the broader educational experience.
- Participate in staff development programs, curriculum planning meetings, and other professional activities to stay current with trends and innovations in dance education.
Qualifications & Behavioral Competencies:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or Education with a concentration in Dance; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching dance in a school or studio setting.
- Certification in Dance Education or equivalent preferred.
- Proficient in utilizing technology for teaching and choreography, such as multimedia tools and virtual platforms.
- Strong instructional and classroom management skills, with an ability to engage and motivate students of varying abilities.
- Demonstrated passion for dance and a commitment to nurturing student growth in both technical skill and creative expression.
- Ability to collaborate constructively with colleagues, students, and families to foster a vibrant school culture.
- Open to feedback and dedicated to continuous professional growth and development.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- The role requires regular physical activity, including standing, moving, and demonstrating dance techniques. May involve occasional lifting of equipment or materials up to 25 pounds.
- While generally based in a dance studio or classroom setting, the environment may include exposure to outdoor conditions during school performances or activities.
